Terrain Affinities F.A.Q.

Terrain Affinities
In order to cast an elemental spell, you'll need both MP and an affinity source from the terrain; during a battle, knowing your terrain can be an important advantage. Some terrains will power up or weaken certain elements as well. Gravity is almost always an active affinity, unless the terrain is a dimensional rift or on another abnormal plane of existence. Of course, lesser affinities combined of two elements (Such as Steam from Fire+Water), require both affinity sources be met by sources.

Times of Day
Remember! Time of day also changes Light and Dark's effectiveness. Light spells are stronger in the day time but weaker at night; the same effect is reversed during the opposing hours. These effects are active regardless of whether you're inside or outside. However, noon causes both elements to be balanced, neither stronger nor weaker.

Physical Affinities
When the right affinities aren't on the terrain and you need one to use the spell, there is a chance you may still be able to! This is called Physical Affinity, where one drains their own HP or SP in order to replace the terrain affinity. The chance you are able to do this depends on two things:
1) The affinities you need to cast the spell.
2) The makeup of your character's affinities.
Every 10 AFF your character has, counts as 1% chance of being able to use it as a terrain affinity. However, since it is draining their body's affinity (ex. Heat, Water, ect.) it will cause slight damage to their HP. (The amount of damage depends on half of the total MP cost.)

Substitute Affinities

Another way to ensure usage of terrain affinities, is known as a Substitute Affinity. Technically it's any other unnatural source besides a Physical or Terrain Affinity. This includes items and spells which imbue affinities into a character or terrain; (though it's effect will still be that of a physical affinity if used on an ally, damaging their HP upon using the spell.)

Below are some examples of Terrain Affinities, though it really depends on the specific dungeon.
(Ex. A sewer dungeon with water affinity or a dungeon with lit torches, giving it light and fire affinities.)

- STORY DATA -

Storyline: (Past) He was an orphaned child with no recollection of his parents. Perhaps he was abandoned. He met with some children who also lived on the street. He was nicknamed Yoru (Night) by the other children as a mean joke, because he was afraid of the dark at night. He also never remembered his real name. But soon a group of people came to help them, or so they claimed. Disguised as an orphanage agency, they took many of these homeless children, promising them good homes. However, it was actually a corporation which would use them. Train them harshly, use torture in their experiments to create beings of high psychic ability without caring for their physical needs; starving them, removing body parts in their tests to increase abilities. Yoru thought he would never see his friends again... even if they or he survived.

(Present) Somehow he had sustained through the torture, removal of his eyes, ears and tongue. He was taught to see, hear, speak and taste through his new abilities. However, he felt like a monster and no longer human. He still cared for humans, though these people who had hurt him were also human. So were the innocent children, just as he once was... After many frustrating attempts to escape, they chained and shackled him so he couldn't move freely. As many of the strongest experiments had, he also had a record file CD case attached to his chains. It dragged as a ball and chain would. However, the data in the file would be frightening to watch; as it contained footage of every second of the experiments, torture, and display of Yoru's abilities at full potency. He watched as many more innocent children were turned into the same weak shells of humans, which hid dangerous powers.. As he listened in, he learned that Kinet Corp. the organization was training these children for war; no one would expect them. Also, children from a young age have the highest psychic potential for the waves their brains generate. Inside, Yoru's heart burned with determination to set these children free...

As he grew older, his body barely changed; but his mind and heart did. He took up the courage to try another escape attempt, after some of his own psychic enhancements he acquired through research and sneaking around in databases and laboratories. He was now powerful enough to escape the clutches of being imprisoned again, and it gave him just enough time to guide the other children to safety. Using his strong psychokinesis, he removed a giant chandelier from the ceiling of a nice room that was used for the staff; who were obviously rich for what they did... He then used this chandelier as both a weapon for any guards or restraints which tried to stop him, and used the candlelight as a means to guide the children to safety through underground tunnels. It would take many years to help all of them escape, and more when they were captured... but he hoped someday to bring a stop to this corporation. Perhaps help a few eager beings, like himself, to increase their abilities and rebel to destroy it. He still lives in a chamber deep beneath the corporation's basement level, in an underground chamber which nearly resembles a cave. He has vast knowledge of the paths and is a living map of the building as well as his underground tunnels, which are still unknown t0 the corporation. He eventually came to have a strange comfort from the darkness of the night which he previously feared.
